Do you have allergies? Do you get an allergic reaction when in contact with a cat? If your answer is “yes” then you might have found the right breed of cat. The reason you are allergic to cats is due to the existence of a protein called FEL D1. The primary sources of FEL D1 are secretions from the glands of the skin and what is left on the fur from the saliva when the cats clean themselves. Eventually, these allergens flake off and become airborne, triggering allergic reactions. While there is no breed of cat that is considered non-allergenic that is ‘having no tendency to provoke an allergic reaction, the Siberian Cat produces a REDUCED LEVEL of FEL D1, due to a protein sequence missing from their DNA. And that is the reason people with allergies have less chance to react to Siberian cats.

Only pure-bred Siberian cats will have this genetic advantage, so it is very important to choose the right breeder. It is important to note that the DEGREE to which different individuals react or don’t react to a Siberian can vary from cat to cat and person to person. Therefore, if your allergies are moderate to severe, you should test your allergies with the kitten you will be bringing home with you, or their parents.

Kittens will never produce more FEL D1 than their parents, so if you are only able to meet the parents of the kitten don’t worry about having a reaction to their offspring.

If you have allergies, we require you to come and spend some time with the kittens and/or their parents. You can stay for a few hours and play with them, not only will it make sure that there is no reaction; it will also allow you to pick out the one that you like.
